Using travel gift cards at scale: what matters on a bulk order
A travel gift for one colleague takes five minutes. For two hundred employees it goes wrong on delivery, validity and admin. These are the points that actually matter on a bulk order.
Why a travel gift works as an employee gift
Most corporate gifts disappear. A bottle of wine gets drunk, a power bank ends up in a drawer. A travel gift is kept until it is used, and the moment it is used is usually a good one. That is a large part of why it works.
The second part: people travel differently. One person books a weekend nearby, another saves it towards a long-haul flight. A gift that leaves that choice open suits a group whose preferences you do not know.
Where bulk orders go wrong
Delivery
For a team working from home, check that you have the correct email addresses.
Timing around the holidays
December is the busiest period of the year for gift cards, at every supplier. Order in the second week of December and you are competing with everyone. For end-of-year gifts, November is the moment, not December.
Validity period
This matters more for a group than for an individual gift. Some recipients use the card within a month, others forget it until next year. A short validity period means part of your budget evaporates without making anyone happy. The validity period differs per country and is stated in the TravelGift terms and conditions — check it before placing a large order.
Admin
For a business order, request a quote.
Tax treatment
How gift cards for staff are taxed differs per country, and the thresholds change. Have your accountant or payroll team check the treatment before you place the order, not after. This is one of the few parts of a bulk gift order that is genuinely expensive to get wrong.
What it does and does not work for
A travel gift card works well for end-of-year gifts, anniversaries, the close of a project and farewells. It works less well as a direct performance bonus: the distance between the achievement and the reward is too large, and a gift card that feels like a salary component stops feeling like a gift.
Client relationships are different again. There, the value of the gift matters less than whether it stands out from everything else. In December a travel gift stands out among the wine bottles; in May it stands out even more.
In short
- Order end-of-year gifts in November, not December.
- Check the email addresses for a distributed team.
- Mind the validity period: in a group, not everyone uses the card quickly.
- Request a business quote.
- Have the tax treatment checked in advance, not afterwards.
